JAO MIECO Jay, Joe, Traveller
Personality: Often, Jao appears to be emotionless and without understanding others. For the most part, this is true. He spent a large part of his late teen and young adult life dedicating it to learning how to be the best air bender and from that he managed to slightly separate himself from worldly concerns. This can be seen most clearly in the fact that Jao will often remain silent for as long as he can as well as avoid interacting unless necessary. Despite this, he is often one to initiate a fight if needed because he doesn't see why he should wait and allow innocents to be hurt. So underneath the exterior, Jao is actually a really caring man - making sure that those without the ability to defend themselves will not be harmed. He also is keen to lend a hand when it's needed, either in a shop or out in the fields. From doing this, he has been able to gather a range of useful skills that he gets to reuse when he next volunteers, even if he works for free. However, he has often found that despite offering to work for free, families will often offer a small token of gratitude, sometimes money but more often a meal (or meals and board for how long he is needed) and Jao does not refuse these offers. Unlike other air benders, Jao doesn't conform too much too the rules. He will eat meat if it's a matter between life and death and often grows his hair out when he isn't at an airbending temple. Still, he does try to obey what he can and so in most times, when he is offered meat (and it can be spared) he will take it with him to redistribute to poorer people. Likes:

History: Born to two loving and caring airbenders, Jao like other children of the Air Nomads showed early signs of his bending abilities and was quick to take to using his glider when he was first given it at the age of 8. However, he was not keen to use any other form of bending, content with flying and there were two years spent without making any progress. So he was sent off to another air Temple where he could focus without the distraction of his parents and they kept his glider. So within three years, Jao was starting to master the basics, but he was way behind, about five years older than most of the class, sometimes even 8 years older, though. However, because he had made more progress than was expected, he was allowed to glider back. Jao started to explore the surrounding area and came upon a cave. With the natural curiosity of a thirteen year old, he went in to explore and then proceeded to get lost. Night came and even the cracks in the cave above his head yielded no light. It was dark and he could not see anything. Jao was terrified and it was this fear that lead him to suddenly master the air swipe as soon as the dawn had come and he could see a crack in the roof. The cave roof opened wide and he flew out and headed straight back to his room. Jao was in trouble but it was deemed that he had suffered enough. After that, Jao flung himself into studies. He paid rapt attention and started to excel with more speed than anyone had ever expected. Within five more years, just after his eighteenth birthday, Jao was finally ready to start learning the Master techniques. There was a small period of adjustment and then Jao started learning as much as he could. It took three years for him to know enough of the basics and then another three for him to have the everything but the Air Sprout. For the last two years, he has been travelling around the world, working on the Air Spout and being as helpful as he can. Skills: Jao is a master air bender and he has mastered all bending abilities apart from the Air Spout which sometimes works for about half a minute but mostly lasts even less time and can't support him. Weakness: Jao is not the strongest of masters and his preference of preemptive strikes and a lack of spirituality has left his bending being weaker than it could be and is one of the reason why he is struggling to master the Air Spout. He also has a strong dislike of being trapped, especially underground and in such cases, he is either likely to shut down/panic and be unable to do anything, or lash out and achieve very little. Because Jao often leaves his head unshaved, unlike other airbenders, he struggles to pick up on the air currents that tell him when danger is about to strike. Jao usually gets around this by trying to attack first. Role-Play Sample: Grey eyes stared ahead at the scene unfolding behind him. Jao appeared unmoved and calm, perfectly still as he was watching. A child had climbed into a tree and was now stuck. The small girl was screaming in fear, tears rolling down her face as she clung desperately to the trunk. Her father was desperately trying to reach her but there was now way that he could grab her and carry her down. The distressed mother watched, helpless from the side lines. The village had mostly gathered to watch the situation unfold and some of the younger men had been sent to try and find a ladder to help them rescue the child. Their efforts were futile. Too often Jao saw these sorts of scenario too often. He felt that it was his place to help as an air bender. It was an obligation and no one should have to be helpless or suffer. Jao had found that out in that cave. Finally, Jao walked forward, calm as anything, moving to stand next to the mother. The father was busy battling with the sticks in his face as he tried to coax the girl to leave the tree. "Let me help," He said softly, looking to the woman. "What?" She asked confused, staring at him. Jao naturally hide his tattoos. "I can help, but your husband is in the way." He said softly. "Dagu! This man says he can help!" She said, desperately, sensing his power. The father reluctantly climbed down and Jao got his glider out. There were gasps as it came out of the stick and Jao took his hat off, handing it over to the woman. She took it without a word and Jao glided right into the tree, landing lightly on the branches and moving towards the girl. She stared at him with wide green eyes. "You're an air bender!" She trembled and Jao gave a nod. He tucked his glidder away and in the form of a stick. "Climb onto my back," He ordered. She shook her head. "Scared," She cried. Jao knew that feeling well. It had been many years ago, and dark. No one deserved to live with such fear. "Just like a piggyback," Jao said softly. Slowly she tried. Feeling the girl's weight fully on him, Jao carefully moved away from the trunk, keeping his balance. The girl cried out in fear. "Close your eyes. We will be down before you know it," Jao said. The girl held tight and Jao assumed her eyes were closed. So the man launched himself into the air, slowing his descent with his bending. Gently they landed and he crouched down. The child, sensing the earth near her let go and ran to her parents. With a quick movement of air, Jao had returned his glidder to himself and walked away from the happily reunion. He was not one for parties. |
